Biography

The son of a St. Alban´s printer, Michael Palmer attended the local Grammar School before going to King´s College, Cambridge. He started running at school and continued after going to university where he became a one-, two-, and three-miler, as well as a steeplechaser and cross-country runner. He was both an athletics and cross-country Blue, and won the Varsity cross-country race three years in succession, 1956-58.

Palmer won the Hertfordshire County Cross-Country title in 1958, crossing the line in joint-first place with his older brother Peter. Michael was also a Southern Counties champion but never won a AAA title. His best finishes were third in 1960, and second in 1961. Selected for the 1960 Roma Olympics, Palmer was eliminated in the first round of the steeplechase after finishing eighth in his heat. Palmer´s brother Peter also went to Cambridge (Selwyn College) and he too was a cross-county Blue. The brothers both competed in the Varsity cross-country match in 1955.

Personal Best: 3000S – 8:50.4 (1960).
