Biography

Walter Porter was the Yorkshire champion at 880 y, the mile, and 3 miles but the mile was his strongest event and he placed third at the 1923 AAA Championship. After winning his heat in the AAA mile in 1926, his seventh place in the final was a disappointment. At the 1924 Olympics, Porter led the British team home in the heats of the 3K team event, but in the final he finished 10th and, as the fourth-placed Briton, he was not a scoring member of the team that won the silver medals. He joined the electricity department of York Corporation as a boy of 14 in 1917 and retired in 1967 after 50 years of service. He was a Freeman of the City of York.

Personal Bests: Mile – 4:21.8e (1923); 3000 – unknown.
