Biography

Jwani Riad Noseir’s biggest moment as a basketball player came when he represented Egypt at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. There, his country was defeated in round one by Peru, but survived by besting Turkey in the repêchage. Egypt was again defeated in round two, however, this time by Uruguay, and was subsequently eliminated from the tournament by Mexico. Riad Nosseir played in all four matches. He remained active in the sport after his playing days were over, serving as an international referee and an administrator. Most notably, he was the General Secretary for the Cairo Regional Basketball Association for many years. His older brother, Kamal Riad Noseir, was also a member of the Egyptian squad in Berlin.
