Biography

A well-known sporting figure in Alexandria, footballer Kamal El-Sabbagh spent most of his career as a player and a coach with Ittihad Alexandria. His most successful year in the former capacity was 1948, when he won the Egypt Cup with his team and was also selected to represent Egypt at the 1948 London Olympics. The nation was eliminated in round one, however, and El-Sabbagh never had the opportunity to play. He continued to compete internationally until 1952, when an injury sustained in a match against Turkey led him to retire from active competition.

El-Sabbagh then turned to coaching and, as an assistant to Sayed Houda, helped Ittihad win an Egypt Cup in 1963. He earned two more for the team as technical director in 1973 and 1976. In 1973 he had a brief stint as a coach with the Egyptian national team, and also spent a short time with the Saudi youth team in 1975. By career he was in business, working as director of public relations for a wood company, and eventually served on Ittihad’s board of directors. His son, Tarek El-Sabbagh, represented Egypt in basketball at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
