Biography

Huang Jiliang entered the English Department of Sun Yat-sen University in 1931. He was goalkeeper for the SCAA and the Guangzhou Police teams and member of the Chinese squad at the 1934 Far Eastern Games and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Huang was not fielded in the team’s only game at the Olympics but played extremely well in several games on their tour and was called the “Bronze Wall” or “Iron Wall” by the newspapers.

After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, Huang Jiliang joined the anti-Japanese guerrillas in Malaya and was later captured by the Japanese army. He was tortured, but fortunately rescued from prison by a friend saving his life. He later taught at the sports department of the Sun Yat-sen University and the Hong Kong South China Sports Association.
