Biography

From 1958 to 1974 Andrzej Jarosik played for Zaglebie Sosnowiec where he was one of the best footballers in Poland. Jarosik made more than 260 appearances for the side, scoring 113 goals, with him being the Polish league’s top scorer for two consecutive seasons (1969–70 and 1970–71). Following his success in Poland he played a handful of seasons in France, first for Racing Strasbourg, before finishing his career with Toulon in the 1976–77 season.

Jarosik made his international début for the Poland national team in May 1965 in a 1–1 draw against Bulgaria. His second appearance for Poland did not come until October 1966 when he was on the scoresheet in their 4–0 win against Luxembourg. He played 25 matches for the national team, scoring 11 goals, with his last appearance coming in April 1972 in an Olympic qualification match against Bulgaria.

Jarosik was part of Poland’s squad for the tournament at the 1972 München Olympics, with him named as a substitute for their key match against the Soviet Union. He was not in the starting eleven for the fixture, with Jarosik refusing to take to the pitch in protest when asked to by the coach to play later in the match. Zygfryd Szołtysik ultimately came on instead, with him scoring the winning goal. Poland went on to beat Hungary 2–1 in the final to win the gold medal. Jarosik and Marian Szeja did not receive gold medals as neither of them played in any matches at the München Games. The Polish Olympic Committee recognised both players’ rights to the medals, awarding them both with a gold badge in 2001. The International Olympic Committee, however, does not list either player as a medallist.
