Biography

Sid Sanders made his début for Nunhead as a 16-year-old in the 1906-07 season and the Isthmian League side was his only club for more than 20 years, with the exception of one game for Crystal Palace in 1914-15. During his time with Nunhead they finished runners-up in the Isthmian League twice in the early 1920s, and in 1923 they won the London Senior Cup, beating Bromley 1-0 in the final. An inside-forward, he won representative honours playing for the Isthmian League, London, the Southern Counties and after scoring two goals for the South against the North in an international trial match in January 1912, he was called up for his International debut the following month and scored against Wales at Bishop Auckland. He played for England amateurs five more times in 1912-13 and was also a member of the Great Britain squad at the Stockholm Olympics although he didn’t play in any of Great Britain’s three matches which saw them win their last Olympic football gold medal. The famous cricketing Compton brothers, Dennis and Leslie, who both played football for Arsenal, started their footballing careers at Nunhead.
