Biography

Between 1902 and 1907 Harold Uren played on the wing for local sides New Brighton Weslyans, Northern Nomads, Wrexham, Hoylake and Harrowby before joining Liverpool as an amateur. He made his first team début for Liverpool in the 1-1 draw at Manchester City in a first division game on 16 November 1907. He played only two games for the Reds in that first season and the following season he played just one game, in the 5-0 defeat by neighbours Everton at Goodison Park. In 1908 he was selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympics as one of the non-travelling reserves. Uren turned professional with Liverpool in 1909 and enjoyed three more seasons with them before moving across Stanley Park to join rivals Everton for a couple of seasons. He played eight games for Everton in his first season as they finished runners-up in the first division. Harold then had a spell back at Wrexham and in 1914 scored one of Wrexham’s three goals in the win over Llanelli in the Welsh Cup Final replay at Oswestry. It was his first major medal in senior football. He ended his career at another Welsh club, Lochgelly United, having played played a total of 67 Football League games for Liverpool and Everton, all in the top flight. Uren worked as a provision merchant for his father as a youngster and continued the trade after his playing days and in 1946 became President of the Liverpool Provision Trade Association. Harold never won an England international cap but his two sons Harold Jr. and Dick were both England Rugby Union England internationals. Harold senior was also a notable local cricketer in the north-west of England.
