Chapman was one of three Stockton players in the 33-man Great Britain squad for the 1912 Olympics; Harold Stamper and Bill Callaghan being the others. But only Stamper went to Stockholm, the other two stayed at home as non-playing reserves. All three were also members of the Stockton team that beat Eston United in a replay to win the FA Amateur Cup in 1912. Chapman had previously played in the Stockton side that got beat in successive amateur cup finals in 1907 and 1908 by Clapton and the Royal Engineers respectively. He did, however, win a Northern League Championship medal in the 1906-07 season. Chapman never won an International cap, the nearest he came was in 1908 when he played for the North against the South in the international trial match at Stamford Bridge.
