Biography

Harry Raymond spent most of his playing career at Plymouth Argyle and had the honour of playing, and scoring, for them on their début in the third division of the Football League in the 5-1 home win over Newport County on 11 September 1920. Born in the Plymouth district of Crownhill, Raymond was a former horse saddle and harness maker who joined Argyle from Woodland Villa in 1908 and four years later was one of the non-travelling reserves of the Great Britain team for the Stockholm Olympics. An inside-forward, he had a memorable year in 1913 when he won the first of his three England Amateur caps and also helped Plymouth to win their first Southern League title. During World War I Raymond guested for Scottish club Motherwell, but after the hostilities it was back to Argyle and those early days in the third division. In the four seasons he played in the League with the Pilgrims, Raymond made 72 League and Cup appearances and scored 10 goals as Plymouth finished runners-up in division three (south) on three successive occasions (only the champions were promoted in those days). But in all games, including pre-Football League days, he played 257 times and scored 50 goals for Plymouth, before rounding off his career at nearby Torquay United as player-manager.
