Biography

Hammer thrower Klaus Ploghaus had his greatest moment at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, winning the bronze medal behind his teammate Karl-Hans Riehm. He was also nominated for the 1980 Moskva Games, but could not start due to the US-led boycott. At World Championships Ploghaus finished sixth in 1983, while at the European Championships he was twelfth in 1978, eighth in 1982 and ninth in 1986. Nationally he won the 1982 West German, adding nine other podiums. He also won the non-Olympic weight throw titles in 1980-81 and 1983-84. By profession he was an architect. His brother Peter also was a nationally successful hammer and weight thrower.
