Biography

Shot putter Dieter Urbach was West German shot put Champion in 1960-64, also indoors in 1962-64. He also competed in the discus throw and came in second at the German Championships in 1956, 1961 and 1963. In 1960 Urbach finished seventh at the Roma Olympic Games in the shot. At the European Championships he placed ninth in 1958 and seventh in 1962.

In his youth Urbach started as a swimmer and gymnast before changing to athletics. He studied sports teaching and headed the sports school in München-Grünwald from 1963-65. During this era he was also regional coach of the Bavarian Athletics Association. Urbach later became an economist.

Personal Best: SP – 19.09 (1964).
