Gustav Ntiforo was the oldest of nine children born to a Presbyterian minister in Ghana and got his education in a boarding school. As a talented athlete Ntiforo qualified for the 1960 Roma Olympics where he ran in the 100 metres. He narrowly missed out on advancing to the quarter-finals after finishing fourth in his heat, with only the top three progressing. The following year he reached the semi-finals of both the 100 and 200 metres at the Summer Universiade in Sofia, Bulgaria. After teaching at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, Ntiforo moved to the United States in 1975 and studyied at the University of New Mexico. In addition to teaching at the university he was also employed by the Albuquerque Public Schools, working with children in the education sector.
