Track and field athlete Patrick Michael Field was born in South Africa where he was the East Province Junior Champion in the 800 metres for two consecutive years. Field moved to England in 1956, initially giving up on athletics, before moving to Hong Kong in 1960 where he joined the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. He was then asked to compete in the Police Championships where he won the 800 metres and the 1,500 metres. In 1962 he represented Hong Kong at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia where he ran in the 880 yards. Two years later he competed for Hong Kong at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and set national records in both the 800 and 1,500 metres.
After his retirement from competing Field became a coach with the Hong Kong Athletic Association (HKAAA), eventually becoming the chair of their coaching committee. When he retired from the Police Force he became a sports correspondent for the South China Morning Post. Field later worked as a team official for the HKAAA at the Commonwealth Games before returning to live in South Africa.
Personal Bests: 800 – 1:54.0 (1964); 1500 – 4:02.6 (1963).
