Pál Bedő, originally Pál Brhlik, started his athletic career as an athlete with Nagyvárad SE in 1911. In 1914, he started his studies at the University of Budapest and moved to the University Sportclub BEAC, but both his studies and athletic career were interrupted by World War I. After the war he competed again and in 1919 achieved his greatest success. He was a four-time Hungarian champion in shot put (1920-21, 1924-25) and in 1920 also won the discus throw. In 1924, he competed in the Paris Olympics in shot put. In 1924, he officially changed his name to Bedő, which he had already used during his sports career. In 1925, he graduated from university and moved back to his hometown where he began his career as an architect.
