Biography

Sándor Eckschmiedt started to boxing as a child at KISTEXT, then he played football for a while at Lőrinci Fonó, and finally ended up in athletics when he was a third-grade high school student. In 1959 he started studying at the College of Physical Education and transferred his affiliation.

He was called up to the national team for the first time in 1962 at the European Championships in Belgrade, where he reached the final and finished eleventh. From there he became a stable member of the Hungarian national team. Although he did not stand on the podium in a world competition during his career, he represented Hungary in three more continental competitions (1966, 1969, 1971) and three Olympics (1964, 1968, 1972), and reached the finals in all major international competitions. He already participated in the summer games as an athlete of Újpesti Dózsa, where he did athletics from 1964 until the end of his career in 1976. He won the Hungarian championship in the hammer throw in 1972 and five times as team champion with Dózsa.

He appeared in the Hungarian national team 29 times, achieving his personal best result of 71.96 meters in 1972. After his retirement, he took on a role not only as a coach, but also in the management of the sport. At Újpest he first worked as a coach and then as a sports psychologist, and in 1980 he became a university lecturer at the TF (College of Physical Education) Athletics Department, first as an assistant professor. From 1985 he researched and taught as a university associate professor. Between 1976 and 1984 he was a member of the hammer throw section of the Hungarian Athletic Association and, at the same time, he was a member of the coaching committee of the Hungarian Athletic Association between 1978 and 1980.
