Biography

Henrik Koltai started athletics in his home village. Later he went to the teacher training school in Budapest and continued his sports career at Budapesti Budai Torna Egylet (BBTE). In 1931, he broke the youth record in long jump with 7.22, which was an outstanding achievement internationally at the time. He won numerous youth championships in high and long jump. In his first national championship as a senior, he broke the Hungarian record with 7.48, but the next jumper Lajos Balogh improved it by one centimetre. Between 1935 and 1937 Koltai won three championship titles in the long jump. In 1935, he won a national title as a member of BBTE’s 4 x 100 metre relay team.

At the international level Koltai finished sixth at the 1934 European Championships and appeared at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he did not reach the final. After studying education, he worked as a teacher in Budapest.
