Biography

Jenő Szilágyi was discovered as an athlete of the Levente Association in Ceglédbercel at the 1930 Hungarian cross-country championship. From 1932 he competed for various clubs in Budapest. First at Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre (MTK), starting from 1935 at Újpest Football Club (UTE), from 1940 at Budapesti Budai Torna Egylet (BBTE), then from 1946 at Vasas. Between 1932 and 1950, he won 25 Hungarian championships: 12 in the 10,000, 7 in the 5,000, 4 in cross-country, and twice in the 3,000 steeplechase. During this time, he improved national records 11 times over various distances.

Szilágyi had 33 appearances with the national team. He took part in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he started in the 5,000 metre and 3,000 metre steeplechase but did not make it to either final. He competed in two European Championships at 10,000 metres, finishing fifth in 1934 and fourth in 1938. He was still a member of the national team for the 1948 London Olympics, but did not make it to the Games. He ended his active sports career in 1950. After his retirement, Szilágyi coached in several associations and for a long time was the technical manager of the Építők SC Athletics Department.
