Biography

Mick Hoey was born in Dublin where he attended O’Connell School. An avid runner in his youth, he was the Irish Schools 1 mile champion in 1957 and would later become the 3 miles (5000m) champion with the Clonliffe Harriers in 1960 and 1961. While attending University College Dublin (UCD), Hoey was chosen to compete at the Olympics in 1960 at Roma in the 5000 metres event. He finished 10th in the first heat with a time of 15:00. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he furthered his studies at the University of California (Berkeley), and Queen’s University in Belfast, later receiving a doctorate in physics and working at UCD as a lecturer in the physics department.
