Ireland’s Mick Molloy took up distance running when he was 17-years-old, competing in cross-country events in County Galway. Molloy ran in the marathon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he finished in 41st place. At the 14-mile mark of the race he was forced to discard his shoes due to a blister and ran the rest of the course barefoot. In September 1974 Molloy won the Berchem Marathon in Belgium despite taking a wrong turn during the race. Two months later he set a world record in a 30-mile race in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
Personal Best: Mar – 2-18:22 (1975).
