Biography

Coached by the Olympian Gianni Corsaro, racewalker Roberto Buccione won his only Italian title in the 50 km in 1977. He broke the 5-mile Italian record in Ostia on 25 March 1976 with 36:05.3, 23 seconds better than the previous Italian national record held by Gabriele Nigro.

At the 1976 Olympics Buccione competed in the 20 km, finishing 10th. Two years later he graduated in architecture with a thesis concerning the plan for a sports centre in Southern Roma. In 1978 he also took part at the Praha European Championships where he placed eighth in the 20 km. He could not compete at the 1980 Moskva Games as a NATO soldier, as he was not allowed to make the trip. It was a big disappointment for Buccione who retired from sporting competition at the end of that year. From 1972 to 1980 he won 20 international caps.

Personal Best: 20kmW – 1-25:09t (1980).
