Biography

Umberto Cerati was an Italian middle-distance runner who competed in the 1930s, usually with Sport Club Italia Milano. His first important win was in the 1,500 metres at the 1932 Italian Championship. A year later, on 29 July at Firenze, Cerati won the Italian 800 m title.

In 1934 Cerati was in the United States where he met Joe McCluskey who was a multiple AAU steeplechase champion. In two 3,000 metre races, they won one each. In 1936 Cerati raced only the 5,000 metres and won the Italian Championship with an incredible finishing burst over the final two laps.

At the 1936 Olympics Cerati won the first of three heats on 4 August with 15:01.0. In the final, three days later, he was dropped by the leading pack of six runners, but held on to finish the best of the remaining runners, placing seventh.

Personal Best: 5000 – 14:44.4 (1936).
