Biography

Otello Spampani was an Italian athlete who specialized in the 400 metres. He came into prominence as an 18-year-old at the Italian Championships held in Bologna in June 1936 when he was runner-up in 49.5 behind the not yet 20-year-old Marsilio Rossi, who would die in the war six years later. In years in which the 400m was dominated in Italy by Mario Lanzi, Spampani still managed to come second at the National Championships, again in Bologna, in July 1938 behind Angelo Ferrario.

Internationally Spampani was used primarily in the 4x400m relay team where he was eliminated in the heats at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and took fifth place at the 1938 Paris European Championships alongside Ferrario, Lanzi and the non-Olympian Gioacchino Dorascenzi with 3:19.7. Spampani earned three international caps between 1936-38.

Personal Best: 400 – unknown.
