Biography

István Tímár-Geng started playing competitive sports during his university years with the MAFC basketball team. Tímár-Geng was a member of the national champion team three times with different teams (1943/44 MAFC, 1950 Műegyetemi MEFESZ, 1951 Bp. Haladás), and played for the national team 19 times between 1947 and 1950. He participated in the 1947 European Championship in Prague and the 1948 London Olympics, where the Hungarian team defeated Italy, Canada, and the host Great Britain, but lost to Uruguay and the group winners Brazil after extra time, so they did not advance to the top eight. The Hungarian management did not allow the team to play for 9th-16th place, so due to the lack of play, the team was automatically ranked 16th. He played in all matches at the Olympics and with 38 points was the second-highest scorer for the team. In the 37-36 defeat of Canada, his basket was the last, meaning that it turned the match around. He was also a member of the Hungarian team that finished third at the 1949 World College Championships in Budapest.

Tímár-Geng graduated from the Budapest University of Technology in 1946 with a degree in chemical engineering. In addition to his chemical engineering degree, he later earned a degree in economics. From 1947 until his retirement, he worked in various engineering positions at the Ruggyanta Factory and Taurus, then became a factory manager and finally an international office manager.
