Biography

Saburo Nagao entered law school at Kansai University in 1932. A javelin thrower, his mark of 61.27 metres earned him a place on the Japanese team at the Los Angeles Olympics. Two years later, he won the title at the last Far Eastern Games . During an athletics meet for students at Koshien Stadium Nagao set a national record of 68.59 metres, which was not broken for more than 20 years. In 1935 he took part in the International University Games in Budapest. Domestically, Nagao claimed three consecutive championships with the javelin from 1933-35. Nagao was again selected for the 1936 Olympics but became ill on the way to Berlin and could not compete. In the same year he graduated from university. Later, he was called to service in New Guinea where he died in 1943.
