In the 1930s track and field athlete Rigoberto Pérez was the best pole vaulter in Mexico. Pérez won his first national title in the event in 1931 before going on to win eight consecutive titles from 1933 to 1940. At the 1935 Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador he won bronze. Three years later the games were held in Panama where Pérez won gold, setting a championship record in the process with a clearance of 3.74 metres. He also competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but had a disappointing performance, tying for last place with Guillermo Chirichigno, with both athletes clearing 3.50 metres.
