Biography

In the 1930s Jan Brasser was one of the best all-round track and field athletes in the Netherlands. During his career Brasser won 12 national titles across four different events, set multiple Dutch records, and won a medal at the European Championships. He won his first national title in 1933 with victory in the high jump, defending his title the following year, before winning his third high jump gold in 1936. Brasser was also the Dutch champion in the decathlon (1934–35, 1937), 110 metres hurdles (1937–39), and the discus throw (1937, 1946–47). At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he competed in both the high jump and the decathlon, finishing 12th and fifth respectively. Two years later Brasser won bronze in the 110 metres hurdles at the 1938 European Championships in Paris. He also enjoyed success at the AAA Championships in England, winning the 120 yards hurdles in 1939, and the discus throw in 1946 and 1947.
