Biography

Teun Sprong was a Dutch track and field athlete who specialised in long-distance running during the 1920s. In 1923 He ran a 20 km race in a time of 1-12:18.4, setting a national record that stood for eleven years. The following year Sprong became the Dutch 25 km champion to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1924 Paris Games he ran in the marathon but was forced to withdraw from the race after 30 km, suffering a foot injury. Sprong returned home where he won another 25 km title in 1925, followed by winning the Amsterdam Marathon in 1927. The latter result earned him another spot at the Olympics, this time his home Games in Amsterdam in 1928. History would repeat itself, however, with Sprong again being forced to withdraw from the marathon.
