Zbigniew Orywał took up track athletics after World War II and won his first Polish national title, in the 800 metres, in 1956, a distinction that he would capture five additional times. He was also the AAU indoor champion at 1,000 yards in 1958 and 1959. He was seventh in the 15,00 metres at the 1958 European Championships, and also represented Poland in the 800 and 1,500 metres events at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first round of both. He retired from active competition in 1965 and then turned to coaching at the club level, as well as with the Irish national team.
