Biography

Alberto Matos was a top Portuguese hurdler, winning four national titles in the 110 hurdles (1967-68, 1970, 1972), adding domestic titles at 200 metres in 1970 and 400 metres in 1971. He also set Portuguese national records in both the 110 and 400 metre hurdles, the longer event often considered his best, although he never won the national title at that distance. He did, however, win three consecutive national titles in the 200 metre low hurdles (1968-70).

In addition to his Olympic appearance, Matos competed at the 1969 European Championships in both hurdle events, but failed to get past the heats. He also competed at the European Cup in 1967 and 1979.

Personal Bests: 400 – 47.5 (1972); 110H – 14.2 (1972).
