Biography

Portuguese track athlete Álvaro Silva ran in both the 400 and 800 metres, holding national records in both. In 1986 Silva broke the national record in the 400 metres, doing the same in the 800 metres in 1988, with the latter record standing until 2002. In July 1988 he was part of the Portuguese quartet that won bronze in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the Ibero-American Championships in Athletics in Mexico City. His strong performances during the year earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Seoul Games, where he reached the semi-finals in both the 800 metres and the 4 x 400 metres relay. Silva returned to the Olympics four years later for the 1992 Barcelona Games, where he was part of the relay quartet for the 4 x 400 metres.

Personal Bests: 400 – 46.6 (1988); 800 – 1:45.12 (1988).
