Bertie Phillips

Herbert Thorne Phillips, known as Bertie, came from a large family where he was one of 11 children. Phillips was a renowned sprinter, enjoying success at the South Africa championships and winning gold in the 100, 220, and 440 yards in both 1904 and 1905, in addition to the 220 yards title in 1907. At the 1908 London Olympics Phillips ran in the 100 metres but did not finish in his heat. He was also scheduled to run in the 200 metres and 400 metres but did not start either event.

In 1909, Bertie and brothers Frank, Sidney, and George had success as a relay team, winning the Pretoria championships. After World War II Phillips and several of his siblings represented Pretoria at the 1946 Transvaal District Bowling Championship.
