Biography

The pinnacle of Abram van Heerden’s track career came when he was selected to represent South Africa at the 1948 London Olympics, where he was eliminated in round one of the 100 metres and the semifinals of the 200 metres. Van Heerden studied veterinary science in school and spent his entire career in the public sector in the field of animal disease control. In these roles, he helped found the field of veterinary epidemiology in South Africa and, at the time of his retirement, he was a Director of Animal Health. In his spare time, he was a referee for rugby at the regional level.
