Biography

Marius van Heerden was a South African middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 metres. In 1996 Van Heerden broke the national record that had stood for 25 years when he ran 1:44.57 at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. He was selected to run in the same event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics but was eliminated in his opening heat. His compatriot Hezekiél Sepeng won the silver medal in Atlanta, breaking Van Heerden’s national record in the process. Van Heerden died in January 2021 after contracting the coronavirus. He was 46.
