Biography

William Grüner was a Swedish long-distance runner who represented Fredrikshofs IF in Stockholm. In 1912 Grüner won his first medal at the Swedish championships with a bronze in the marathon. His performance earned him selection to the Swedish Olympic team for the upcoming games in Stockholm where he ran in the marathon but did not finish the course. He won two more medals in the marathon at the Swedish championships with silver in 1918 and 1920. His latter performance earned him another spot on the Olympics team, this time for the Antwerpen Games. Grüner finished in 28th place out of the 35 athletes who completed the course and was awarded a diploma of merit. In 1923 he finally won gold in the marathon at the national championships with a time of 2:43.36 across the 40km course.
