Biography

In the 1940s Olga Šicnerová was the best sprinter in Czechoslovakia, winning five national titles and holding the Czechoslovak record in the 100 metres. After World War II Šicnerová returned to school to finish her studies and joined the athletics club SK Přerov. After finishing third in a high jump competition in 1945 she switched her focus to running, eventually becoming a member of the national team. In the 100 metres she improved the Czechoslovak record on three occasions, with her time of 12.0 seconds meeting the qualification standard for the 1948 London Olympics. At the London Games she advanced to the semi-finals of the 100 metres after winning her heat. Šicnerová also ran in the 200 metres in London but did not finish in the qualifying round.

After the Olympics Šicnerová continued to compete in sprinting with Zbrojovka Brno until 1949 when she retired from sports after marrying her husband. She raised a family before returning to athletics in the 1960s to compete as a veteran. In 1956 Šicnerová received the title of Master of Sports and she was inducted into the Boskovice Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

Personal Bests: 100 – 12.0 (1948); 200 – 25.5 (1948).
