Biography

Vlastimil Brlica took up track and field athletics after World War II and soon came to specialize in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He made his international debut at the 1954 European Championships, where he placed seventh, and then improved to fifth at the 1958 edition. He was then selected to represent Czechoslovakia at the 1960 Roma Olympics, where he was eliminated in an opening round heat won by upcoming Soviet silver medalist Nikolay Sokolov. Nationally, he won the title in this event five times (1954-1956 and 1959-1960) and was thrice runner up (1957-1958 and 1961). He also won a national championship in the 4 x 1500 metres relay and set eight national records, including one over two miles.

Personal Best: 3000S – 8:42.2 (1958).
