Biography

Lithuanian Nijolė Sabaitė had a very brief international career. After winning the 800 bronze medal at the 1968 European Junior Championships, She was selected for the Soviet national team in 1970. She competed at the 1971 European Championships, but was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 800. In 1972 Sabaitė won an 800 silver at the Olympics and in 1973 won silver at the Universiade and bronze at the European Cup.

She was the Soviet 800 champion in 1972-73 and was a five-time Lithuanian SSR champion. Sabaitė finished her sports career after graduating from the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute (now Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences) with a special education degree and later worked with disabled children at the Vilnius University Children’s Hospital and at various Vilnius disabled children homes.

Personal Best: 800 – 1:58.65 (1972).
