Nell Jackson was a sprinter at Tuskegee Institute. In 1946 she won the 200 metres in the first US Junior Nationals for women. At the 1951 Pan-American Games she was on the gold-medal winning 4×100 relay team (with Dolores Dwyer, Janet Moreau, and the non-Olympian Jean Patton) and won a silver medal in the 200 metres. Jackson won the AAU Championship in 1949-50 in the 200. Jackson earned her college degree from Tuskegee, a master’s degree from Springfield College in 1953 and a Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in 1962. She later taught at the University of Iowa, Illinois State, University of Illinois, Michigan State, and SUNY Binghamton. She later became a college professor and track coach and was the women’s head coach at the 1956 and 1972 Olympic Games, in addition to managing 10 US international teams.
