Biography

Although better known as a football player at Ohio University, Les Carney was a match for all but the very best of his contemporary sprinters. In 1959 he finished third in the AAU 200 m and NCAA 220y and placed second in the Pan American Games. In 1960, Carney took second place at the AAU and edged defending Olympic champion, Bobby Morrow, out of third place in the 200 m at the Final Trials. In Rome, he took the silver medal, beating both of his teammates who had finished ahead of him at the Trials. Carney was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1958 but never played pro football. He has spent most of his career in Akron, Ohio, as a buyer for a major sporting goods firm.

Personal Bests: 100y – 9.6 (1959); 100 – 10.3 (1956); 200 – 20.69 (1960).
