Biography

Mark Coogan was a distance runner who is best known as a marathoner, which he ran at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a cross-country runner. He also played basketball in high school and had scholarship offers in that sport from lower-level schools. Coogan started out as a steeplechaser in college at the University of Maryland. He ran the International Cross-Country Championship six times with a best finish of 34th in 1992. He also competed at the 1995 World Championships in the 5,000 metres, after he finished second in the event at the 1995 US Nationals. Coogan won a silver medal in the marathon at the 1995 Pan American Games. He is married to Gwyn Coogan, who ran the 10,000 metres at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Mark Coogan later coached cross-country at Dartmouth and worked for New Balance, as well as coaching professional runners.
