Biography

John Gregorek was a distance runner for Georgetown, the NYAC, and Team adidas. In addition to the 1984 Olympics, he competed in the 1981 Universiade steeplechase and the 1987 World Championships 5K. He also made the US team that did not compete at the 1980 Olympic Games, and finished third in the 5K at the 1992 US Olympic Trials, but did not make the team as he did not have a qualifying time. At the 1982 Penn Relays, Gregorek anchored the Georgetown distance medley relay team that won the event, ending the 16-year winning streak of Villanova in that event. Gregorek married Christine Mullen, a non-Olympian who made the finals of the 1,500 at both the 1980 and 1984 US Olympic Trials. Their son also became a top middle-distance runner, first for Columbia University and then for the University of Oregon, and he ran the 1,500 at the 2017 World Championships.
