Biography

While attending Georgia Tech, Ed Hamm won the NCAA title in 1927 and 1928 and then took the 1928 AAU / Olympic Trials long jump with a world record of 25-11⅛ (7.90). At the Olympics, Hamm scored a comfortable win over Silvio Cator of Haiti with an Olympic record of 25-4¼ (7.73), but 40 days later, Cator claimed the world record with the first ever jump over 26 feet – 26-0¼ (7.93).

Hamm attended Georgia Tech to play football, but the athletic director decided he was better on the track. Hamm won Southeastern Conference titles for three consecutive years in the 100 yards, 220 yards, and long jump. After graduating in 1928 he served as the Rambling Wrecks’ track coach for several years, but later became an executive with Coca-Cola on the West Coast and in Alaska. He was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.

Personal Bests: LJ – 7.90 (1928).
