Biography

Ruben Reina ran the 5,000 metres at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but failed to make the final. He starred in high school at John Jay High School in San Antonio when he won the 1986 Foot Locker Cross-Country Championship in a record time of 14:36. He was a seven-time Texas state champion, winning the mile and 2-mile in his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. Reina ran for the University of Arkansas where he won the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000 metres in consecutive seasons, and helped Arkansas to win the NCAA Indoor title for four consecutive years. His older brothers, Randy and Roland, were also successful distance runners who ran for Arkansas.

After college Reina continued running professionally, winning the Milrose Games 3K in 1991-92 and 1994-95. He was also USA Cross-Country Champion in 1994 and 1996. Reina is a member of the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Personal Best: 5000 – 13:24.78 (1991).
