Vietnamese athlete Nguyễn Văn Thuyết first competed in cross-country in 1975, finishing 17th in the national championships. Following this Nguyễn continued to train hard, winning multiple cross-country championship races and setting a national 10 km record that stood for more than a decade. In 1988 he was selected to run in the marathon at the Seoul Olympics but finished more than an hour behind the winner down in 97th place.
Nguyễn had five daughters, all of whom became long-distance runners, winning multiple medals and setting several national records between them. He was also a life-long fan of the Nam Định football club where he was known for his passionate support. Nguyễn attended matches for almost 30 years along with his custom-built drum that he would play throughout each game.
