During the 1930s Slovenian middle-distance runner Emil Goršek won multiple and international titles in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres. Goršek was a four-time champion of Yugoslavia with three wins in the 1,500 metres (1934–35, 1938), along with one in the 800 metres (1938). At the 1937 Balkan Games he did the double by winning both races before repeating the feat the following year. Goršek also ran in both races at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but did not advance from the heats in either.
