Biography

A member of a prominent family on the Isle of Man, his father was one of the island’s few judges and his uncle composed the Manx “national anthem”, Frederick Gill was the first islander to compete at the Olympics. During the 1900 Olympic polo tournament Gill played for Bagatelle Polo Club, Paris, a French club.

An army officer who served with the Dragoon Guards and the Oxfordshire Hussars, he was promoted to the rank of Captain during the First World War. At different times, he held the position of manager of polo at the Point Judith club in Rhode Island and the Ranelegh club in London.
