Czech-born Austrian figure skater Sonja Balun later married ice hockey player Kurt Harand. Their sons Christoph and Patrick Harand also became professional ice hockey players. Her non-Olympian parents Soňa Balunová and Miloslav Balun, were also figure skaters in Czechoslovakia.
As a singles skater, Balun participated in the 1971, 1974, and 1975 World Championships and the 1971-75 Europeans, but with little success. At the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics Balun came 17th. Domestically, she won four national titles. Later she turned to coaching.
