Biography

Hans Jost was born in Neuchâtel, the son of a watchmaker, and grew up in Bienne. first began boxing with his hometown club, Boxe Club de Bienne in the early 1940s. He moved to Bern where he competed for ABC Bern in the late 1940s, and retired from competition in 1950, having never won a national title, last losing to Hans Müller of Basel in the heavyweight final that same year. Nearing the age of 30, Jost made a return to boxing in early 1952 to compete at a pre-Olympic meet at La Chaux-de-Fonds. There, he surprised by defeating the reigning heavyweight champion Gérard Cottier of Neuchâtel, and in his next match, defeated Horst Zewen of Zürich by knocking him out in 30 seconds. Eventually named to the Swiss Olympic team to compete at Helsinki, Jost competed in the heavyweight tournament, but did not fare well, losing in a knockout to eventual gold medallist Ed Sanders of the USA in the first round of his only match.

Jost was trained as a carpenter and cabinetmaker by profession. In 1948, he married Erica Kaufmann. He later lived in Rütschelen and was an active member of the Swiss Cynological Society as well as the Swiss Saint-Bernard Club, training and competing with his dogs in many shows and competitions throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
