Biography

Although she was a fine athlete during her time at Dundee High School, Helen Jamieson´s first love was skiing after first going on skis at the age of seven. She took part in a competition at the Dundee Ski Club in 1958 when she was still 11. Also taking part were her parents Hilda and David. The following year Helen finished second in the Scottish Kandahar Trophy and a week alter was third in the Scottish Junior Championships.

Jamieson went on to win the Scottish junior title in 1960 and was the British girls´ champion in 1963 (and runner-up in 1964). The highlight of her career was competing at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Games when she finished 26th and 30th respectively in the downhill and giant slalom.

The Jamiesons were talented skiers and not only were Helen´s parents both competitive skiers, so too were her older sisters Sheila and Valerie, who both represented Scotland at junior level. Helen´s daughter, Susan Somerville, was an East of Scotland under-16 champion and in 1970 was runner-up in the giant slalom at the Commonwealth Winter Games, and was the British women´s slalom champion the following year. Jamieson´s mother Hilda was still skiing the year before she died at the age of 103, despite being 90% blind.
